For Immediate Release: October 22, 2002

Contact: Phyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director 847.249.5147

The support and volunteer efforts of a number of individuals, groups and businesses who assist A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center in its mission to eliminate domestic violence were recognized at the Annual Meeting of the agency October 21 at Baxter International.

Grantastic Designs, a web design firm from Carpentersville, and its owners Grant Crowell and Shari Thurow, received this year’s Communications Award for their donation of design and implementation of Safe Place’s web site, www.asafeplaceforhelp.org. Launched last April, the site provides easy access to services information for victims of domestic violence and serves as a resource for information on the topic.

Fujisawa Healthcare employees received the Corporate Employee Volunteers of the year. The group has participated in holiday gift collections and supply drives for A Safe Place’s shelter, as well as organizing other activities to raise funds for the agency. Employees have also hosted representatives from A Safe Place to learn more about the issue of domestic violence and its impact on the community and the workplace.

The Small Business Award was presented to Design for Marketing of Deerfield and its owner Frank Guercio for pro bono design work the firm does on A Safe Place’s printed materials throughout the year, including the agency newsletter, brochures, and fund raising materials.

Pamela Mazzanti accepted the Outstanding Civic Organization Award for North Shore Ladies of Harley. Members of L.O.H. participate in activities throughout the year to raise funds for A Safe Place as well as collecting gift items during the holiday season.

This year’s Youth Award was presented to Eric Kristiansen of Buffalo Grove. As a project toward the completion of his Eagle Scout award, Eric organized and completed a school supplies drive for the children served by A Safe Place prior to the beginning of the current school year. Eric contacted various businesses throughout the Buffalo Grove area as well as asking for individual donations at participating businesses. In August, Eric brought 75 backpacks and a roomful of school supplies to fill them to the agency.

A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center hosted its 23rd Annual Meeting October 21 at Baxter International in Deerfield. The nonprofit agency provided nearly 15,000 nights of shelter and served more than 3,000 Lake, McHenry and northern Cook county residents with comprehensive services including individual and group counseling, children’s counseling, and court advocacy in its 2002 fiscal year. It is the only nonprofit agency in the area to offer abuser treatment services. A 24-hour HELP LINE is available at 847.249.4450; TTY 847.249.6557.
