Contact: Phyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director 847.249.5147

A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center named eight communities in its service region Purple Ribbon Cities for 2002.

The designation is given to communities who support public awareness of the issue of domestic violence and who participate through various programs with A Safe Place to address the issue.

Those communities selected this year include: the Village of Deerfield, the Village of Grayslake, the Village of Gurnee, the City of Highland Park, the City of Lake Forest, the Village of Libertyville, the Village of Lincolnshire, and the City of Waukegan.

Activities common to those cities selected this year are educational programs that have been presented to civic groups and faith communities, prevention education programs presented by A Safe Place on healthy dating relationships for middle school and high school students and educators, and participation from volunteers in various activities from fund raising to direct client services.

A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and their children, including shelter, individual and group counseling, children’s counseling, court advocacy in obtaining orders of protection and referral services. The nonprofit agency offers programs in community education, prevention education programs on healthy relationships to middle schools and high schools, and professional education for law enforcement, social workers and health care professionals.
