A Safe Place Honors Volunteer of the Year

Andrea Rosengarden of Highland Park was honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Annual Meeting of A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center October 29.

Rosengarden, a trained volunteer in the agency’s court advocacy program, has devoted several hundred hours of service this year to the nonprofit agency that provides comprehensive services to battered women and their children.

Rosengarden learned about A Safe Place and the need for volunteers through her congregation in Highland Park. Once all her children were in school, she decided she wanted to do volunteer work and registered to participate in the agency’s 40-hour training.

After hearing A Safe Place’s senior court advocate talk about the court advocacy program in which staff members and trained court volunteers assist domestic violence victims in obtaining orders of protection, she decided that was the program in which she wanted to volunteer.

“I’ve never experienced abuse myself – I’d only seen such things on television shows; and there you don’t see the actors and stories as real. The reality of what we see at the court program was shocking to me,” explains Rosengarden. “I still get upset, especially when children are involved in these cases.”
