Candle Lighting Ceremony Offers Hope and Support for Domestic Violence VictimsThe courage of one local woman devastated by domestic violence but willing to share her powerful story of survival as an example to others still in need of hope will be the focus of A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center’s 14th annual Candle Lighting Ceremony. Scheduled for Thursday, October 5, at 5 p.m. on the steps of the Lake County Courthouse, she will be joined by Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Waller, Domestic Violence Courtroom Judge Helen Rosenberg, Mundelein Police Chief Ray Rose, and A Safe Place’s Executive Director Phyllis A. DeMott in raising concern for the continued pervasiveness of domestic violence as well as praise for the community’s commitment to demanding accountability for those who perpetrate violence. The Antioch Community High School Choir will provide music and song for the event. Display of the Clothesline Project, t-shirts decorated by survivors of domestic violence and their children, will bring their voices through colorful artwork to the mission of ending partner violence. The Candle Lighting Ceremony is held annually at the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. A display in the Lake County Courthouse will feature the Silent Witnesses, like-sized figures of victims of domestic violence who were residents of Illinois, as well as artwork created by the child witnesses of domestic violence. Proclamations recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in communities and townships throughout Lake County will also be displayed.
