One Safe Place Set to Open in March

One more barrier for battered women struggling to establish lives of self-sufficiency, free from violence, is about to fall.

Four years after initiating a capital project to build Lake County’s first transitional living program for survivors of domestic violence and their children, A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center is currently inviting prospective tenants for the newly-constructed 20-unit apartment building in Zion to submit applications for residence.

Residents will be selected from eligible persons who submit a completed application. Applications may be obtained by phoning Diane Caliendo, Property Manager, at A Safe Place at 847.249.5147. Applications must be completed in full and received by the agency by February 15, 2006.

With affordable housing remaining the number one challenge for victims of domestic violence who seek to flee abusive relationships, the agency anticipates more inquiries for housing than it will be able to accommodate. Eligible applicants will be entered into a lottery after February 15 for selection of the initial residents in transitional living. The first five apartments will be leased by March 1, 2006.

Prospective tenants chosen in the lottery will be interviewed at the new building location in Zion. Those not drawn in the first round of the lottery will have their names placed on a waiting list in lottery order. All applications received after February 15 will be placed on the waiting list in the order received.

Remaining apartments will be leased on the following schedule: 5 tenants by March 15, 2006; 5 tenants by April 1, 2006; and the final 5 tenants by April 15, 2006.

Eligibility for preference in housing is determined by an applicant establishing that they have experienced violence from an intimate partner.

A Safe Place Transitional Living Program does not discriminate against any applicant on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, age, familial status, ancestry, unfavorable military discharge, marital status, receipt of governmental assistance or handicap.

A Safe Place Transitional Living Program does not discriminate on the basis of handicapped status in the admission of or access to, or treatment or employment in its federally assisted programs and activities.
