13-year old girl raises $7,000 for A Safe Place
Every summer since 1999, the Geldermann family of Lake Forest has hosted a kid’s carnival at their home to raise money for a children's charity. Molly Geldermann, who is now a freshman at Northwestern University, organized the carnival each year. Her younger sister, Hannah, an 8th grader at Deerpath Middle School in Lake Forest, has taken over the annual event since her sister has gone to college. This summer, Hannah decided to raise money for A Safe Place, a non-profit organization in Lake County committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Due to her home being under construction this summer, she could not have a kid’s carnival. So, Hannah decided to try something different. Hannah sold jewelry at the Lake Forest Art Fair, set up a lemonade stand in her neighborhood, had a garage sale, and sent letters to people in the community asking for support. Her efforts paid off. Hannah raised $7,000 for A Safe Place – the most she has ever raised.
The $7,000 will go towards A Safe Place’s children’s programs. Each year, children’s advocates and counselors at A Safe Place help hundreds of child witnesses to domestic violence deal with conflicting emotions ranging from fear and confusion to guilt and shame. It is essential that these young victims learn to deal with their strong feelings and to also learn and practice new and healthy ways of communicating and relating to others. A Safe Place believes that focusing on healthy relationships encourages a violence-free future for these children. A Safe Place is thrilled by Hannah’s donation and is inspired by her creativity and dedication. Phyllis DeMott, Executive Director of A Safe Place, says “We can all learn from Hannah’s willingness to show concern for others and to work to make sure they have what they need.”
