Effects of Dating Abuse on Teens

  • Depressed, suicidal, abuses substances.

  • Low self-esteem.

  • Feels responsible for and accepts blame for abuse.

  • May seem generally numb or without affect.

  • Feels confused and crazy.

  • Does not focus on or even recognize own needs.

  • Feels shame and embarrassment about the abuse and seeking help.

  • Feels like a failure for not being able to keep the relationship happy.

  • Feels disconnected from others.

  • May have given up all social and school activities that did not involve the abuser.

  • Needs constant validation and reassurance.

Abuser may have come from an abusive family of origin, witnessed abuse, or experienced abuse.
