Domestic Violence and Women with Disabilities

Definition of a person with a disability, from the Americans with Disabilities Act:
An individual with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. |
Disabled women:
-
Have a rate of 85% of them as victims of domestic violence.

Are raped, assaulted and abused at rates more than 2 times greater than women without disabilities.

Often feel trapped in an abusive relationship because of their disability.

Fear being institutionalized.
-
Have low employment rates and wages.
-
Have low levels of education.
-
Have high poverty rates.
-
Have high rates of segregation in society.
-
Suffer more prolonged and violent abuse than other battered women.
-
Suffer more serious and chronic effects from the abuse.

Suffer:
- Verbal abuse
- Forced segregation
- Intimidation
- Abandonment and neglect
- Withholding of medications, transportation, equipment and personal assistance services
- Physical and sexual violence
