A Safe Place offers support to teens, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week: February 2-6, 2009
ZION, IL (January 29, 2009) – Domestic violence is an epidemic. At least one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. For many, their first experience as a victim of domestic violence is in a teenage dating relationship. Teens are especially vulnerable to dating violence, and peer pressure to date can compound the issue.
February 2-6, 2009 is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. A Safe Place, a non-profit organization in Lake County providing services for victims of domestic violence, offers prevention education programs to raise awareness about teen dating violence. “Teaching young people about healthy and respectful relationships is essential for breaking the intergenerational cycle of domestic violence,” says Phyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director of A Safe Place. “Helping teens to plan a safe way out of a controlling relationship is even more critical.”
A Safe Place provides 24-hour telephone support (847-249-4450) to victims of partner violence of any age. Callers can talk with a domestic violence advocate about abuse they are experiencing in a relationship, or about suspicions they have that a loved one may be the victim of abuse. Referrals to additional counseling and support provided by A Safe Place can also be made by calling this crisis line.
In addition, A Safe Place provides prevention education programs in area high schools and colleges, and to faith and community youth groups and organizations. The programs focus on safety, self-esteem, power and control in relationships, non-violent negotiating techniques, appropriate expressions of anger, and conflict resolution.
