A Safe Place Has Staff Openings

A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center, which provides comprehensive services to survivors of domestic violence and their children in Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties, is seeking candidates to fill the following positions.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES POSITIONS:

Overnight Advocate.  This position is available full-time or as a part-time job-sharing opportunity and available immediately. 

 

The Overnight Advocate is responsible for providing individual counseling, advocacy, education and crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence and their children, who are residents of the shelter, and to telephone callers in crisis.  The Overnight Advocate is also responsible for maintaining the in-kind donations and certain supplies at the shelter.  Other duties will be as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors degree in social work, counseling or closely related field and one year of social work experience required.   High School diploma (or GED) and two years experience in social services and domestic violence may be considered in lieu of degree.  

Flexibility in scheduling required.

Knowledge of computer software programs and ability to enter numerical and alpha data accurately and efficiently.   Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access is helpful.

Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and be able to walk up stairways for organization of donation storage and accessing client living quarters.

Knowledge of counseling theories and modalities with a commitment to client empowerment and self-direction.

Excellent written and oral communication skills to complete record documentation, develop group materials, express information clearly and concisely and for participating in training and education for clients and the community.

Excellent interpersonal skills that demonstrate genuine concern and respect toward clients and other staff.

Ability to provide active listening, encouragement and counseling to clients while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and adhering to agency and professional codes of ethics.

Ability to motivate clients into action, to engage clients in shelter services and to support client progress toward achievement of their service plan and personal independence.

OUR BACKGROUND:

A Safe Place is the only emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence in Lake County and serves more than 2,500 residents in Lake, McHenry and Northern Cook Counties. Services provided include non-legal and court advocacy; group, individual and children's counseling for survivors of domestic violence; abuser assessment and group services; and, professional, prevention and community education. Offices are located in Waukegan and Lake Villa. LCSW/LCPC supervision is available.

In the last year, A Safe Place has provided more than 13,500 nights of shelter, individual and group counseling and children’s counseling to 3,300 area residents, assisted victims of domestic violence in obtaining nearly 2,000 orders of protection, and is the only nonprofit agency in Lake County offering an abuser treatment program. Community outreach and training programs are offered to civic and professional groups and include a prevention education program that last year brought interactive programs about healthy dating relationships to nearly 6,000 students and educators in Lake County schools.
