DeMott Named to Leadership IllinoisPhyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director of A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center, has been selected to participate in Leadership Illinois, a not-for-profit organization offering unique professional development opportunities for women who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their professional fields and civic endeavors. Through a year-long series of seminars, the women selected for the program explore critical state, local and national issues with top leaders from Illinois businesses, government and communities. Modeled after the nationally-acclaimed Leadership America program, Leadership Illinois provides a forum for these leaders from varied fields to develop a strong network that can serve as a catalyst for positive change. The organization encourages businesses, cultural and political leaders to recognize women's achievements and to utilize their expertise in decision-making roles throughout the state. DeMott has served as Executive Director of A Safe Place for eight years. She came to the Lake County-based nonprofit agency offering comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence, from the Night Ministry in Chicago where she was instrumental in developing an emergency shelter for teens called The Open Door. Since accepting the leadership reins at A Safe Place, DeMott has overseen the development and growth of programs to serve the needs of battered women and children that annually provide more than 13,000 nights of shelter, counseling services to 500 residential and 2,100 nonresidential women and children, and court advocacy assistance in obtaining 2,000 orders of protection. It is the only nonprofit agency in the county offering abuser treatment services for court-and self-referred batterers. A Safe Place provides comprehensive services to residents of Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties. Community outreach and prevention education programs in middle and high schools offer information and training to more than 11,000 students, educators and citizens each year.
