Examples of Non-Physical Ways to Exert Power and Control

To view the various examples of non-physical ways abusers exert power and control, please select one of the links below:

Emotional Abuse

  • Name calling
  • Sexual put-downs
  • Making her think she is crazy
  • Putting her down in front of family and friends
  • Bragging about other relationships, phoning them from their house and/or bringing them there
  • Ignoring her, withdrawing attention.

Intimidation

  • Putting fear in her by using looks, actions, loud voices, gestures, body positioning, smashing or destroying property, hurting pets, etc.

Isolation

  • Keeps her from outside communications with her family and friends
  • Limits her phone calls
  • Keeps her from doing activities she likes
  • Invades her privacy or limits personal space

Threats

  • Threatens to kill her
  • Threatens to have someone else hurt her
  • Threatens to hurt or take the children
  • Threatens to throw her out/make her homeless
  • Threatens to destroy property that is meaningful to her
  • Threatens to report her to welfare, DCFS, immigration, etc.
  • Threatens to commit suicide
  • Threatens to have her watched all the time
  • Threatens that if he doesn't have her, no one else will
  • Threatens to kill her pet

Economic Abuse

  • Keeping her from getting or keeping a job
  • Giving her an allowance/controlling all finances
  • Making her ask for money
  • Taking her money
  • Taking money for himself and withholding money for family needs

Using Children

  • Making her feel guilty about the children
  • Constantly criticizing her parenting skills
  • Using the children to give messages
  • Misusing visitation to harass her
  • Abducting the children
  • Telling the children bad things about her

Using Male Privilege

  • Treating her like a servant
  • Acting like the "King of the Castle"
  • Making all the big decisions
  • Has a know-it-all attitude
  • Thinks he has superior attitude
  • Control her property
