Abuser Information

Typical Abuser – 40-50% 0f the population

  • Well-socialized
  • No mental health disorder
  • No criminal record
  • No more than average rate of chemical dependency
  • Does not endorse violence
  • Feels remorse, shame, guilt
  • Violence not severe or frequent
  • Less likely to use weapons

For these people, arrest and therapeutic intervention is very effective.

Personality Disorder – 40% of the population

  • Endorse violence for dealing with conflict
  • Personality disorders: narcissistic, borderline, histrionic
  • More likely to have drug and/or alcohol abuses
  • Have a record
  • Violence more severe and frequent, often with weapons
  • Likely to use weapons, highly manipulative
  • Savvy about the legal system
  • Multiple victims
  • History of violence in teens
  • Sexual abuse as well

For these people, diversion is not effective unless given drug/alcohol treatment at the same time.

Anti-social Personality Disorder – 10-15% of the population

  • Criminal personality
  • Poorly socialized
  • Chemically dependent
  • Mentally ill
  • Violence severe and chronic
  • Abuses children as well as adults
  • Sexual abuse
  • Violent in and out of the home
  • Long record, both as an adult and a juvenile
  • Sociopathic

For these people, long-term therapy is not likely to turn them around.
