Real Estate Closings Open Doors For Domestic Violence Survivors

There isn't a better barometer of success for a real estate agent than when both the buyer and the seller are satisfied when the sale closes. One local agent, however, has added a third party element to her successes in this busiest real estate season of the year. Christine Cabrera, an agent for Century 21 Maki United in Waukegan, is donating a portion of each of her sales commissions to the shelter and comprehensive counseling program of A Safe Place/ Lake County Crisis Center.

Cabrera says the idea of making a donation each time she closed a real estate sale came to her when she began to realize how many people she was acquainted with had benefited from the services of A Safe Place. The Waukegan-based nonprofit agency assists survivors of domestic violence and their children. Last year A Safe Place provided more than 12,200 nights of shelter and assisted more than 3,400 residents of Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties with individual and group counseling, children's counseling, and court advocacy services.

"The women who flee to A Safe Place for safety bring little with them and must face daunting tasks of searching for affordable housing, finding employment and child care, all while recovering from various degrees of physical and psychological abuse," explains Phyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director of the nonprofit agency.

"In a period when our 35-bed capacity shelter has been over capacity for some time and numerous families are housed in motels waiting for shelter space, Ms. Cabrera's generosity could not be more appreciated," adds DeMott.

Cabrera has said that she will continue donating a portion of each of her real estate sales through the end of calendar year 2001. She is hoping that there will be other real estate professionals who are interested in joining in her effort.

Services of A Safe Place can be accessed through a 24-hour HELP LINE at 847.249.4450; TTY 847.249.6557. Bilingual, bicultural staff are available for all counseling and advocacy services. No fees are charged for victim services.
