Domestic Violence Shelter
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ages of the women in the shelter?

Women of all ages come into shelter fleeing the abuse in their homes. Efforts are made to place more senior victims with networking partners who provide other elder services. This is often easier for the client than adjusting to life with other women and their young children.

How long can women stay in the shelter?

A typical stay in our emergency/temporary shelter is six weeks. During this period every effort is made to stabilize a woman's situation and to explore alternatives and resources for taking the first steps toward a violence-free life.

top

What does it cost to stay at the shelter and/or receive counseling services?

There are no fees for victim services from A Safe Place. Counseling services during shelter stay and later in a nonresidential setting continue to be free of charge for as long as services for survivors and their children are needed.

What happens when the shelter is full but a woman fears for her safety?

No one in danger is ever turned away from A Safe Place. When our 35-bed shelter is full we confidentially place a victim and her children in area hotels and motels until room becomes available at the shelter.

How do abusers get help/can they change?

A Safe Place provides an assessment and intervention program for abusers referred to as IPDAV. Following assessments and recommendations to the court system, batterers may attend a 24-week group program emphasizing the accountability of the abuser to the victim and to the community. Those attending IPDAV programs pay fees based on their income.
