A Safe Place Inviting Stylists to Fall of 2004 Lunches

Many women find it more distressing to have to find a new hairdresser than a different doctor. This close and trusting relationship between client and stylist is also the reason why more victims of domestic violence will talk about their fearful situations during a trip to the beauty salon, even before they disclose to their physician, a family member or close friend.

A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center will host a series of fall luncheons for area stylists to recognize this special relationship and to educate members of this profession about domestic violence.

"This outreach to beauty stylists began last year through a grant from the Illinois Women's Health Initiative," said Phyllis A. DeMott, Executive Director of A Safe Place. "The program offers an understanding look at the cycle of domestic violence and how those who come into contact with survivors, such as hairdressers, may be aware of such situations and may offer appropriate referrals to their clients."

The luncheons will be held on Mondays during October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sites for the lunches are the Harbor Club in Antioch, Lambs Farm in Libertyville, and Madison Avenue in Waukegan. For more information or to make reservations, phone the business line at A Safe Place at 847.249.5147.

A Safe Place offers comprehensive services to survivors of domestic violence in Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties. The emergency shelter program provided more than 13,000 nights of shelter to women and their children the past year. Court advocacy provided by the nonprofit agency at the Lake County Courthouse offers assistance to victims to obtaining orders of protection. Individual and group counseling is available in communities throughout the county, including Highwood, Deerfield, Vernon Hills, Round Lake, Lake Villa and Waukegan. A 24-hour HELP LINE is available at 847.249.4450; TTY 847.249.6557.
